Prometheus and the Moon

'Prometheus and the Moon' tells the story of a lonely, grey rabbit called Prometheus, who lives in the frozen wilderness of Alaska and wants nothing more than to travel to the moon and meet The Spiffles; three quirky aliens from his favourite television show. From rockets to transporters, giant paper planes to phone calls to NASA, Prometheus tries anything he can think of to get himself away from his little shack in the wilderness and up to the moon. So join Prometheus as he follows his heart to the friends he's always wanted, in the last place you'd think to look!
This film won the Royal Television Society North West Student Film Award for Animation 2009

Production Photos from 'Prometheus and the Moon'

Picture
This is how the main 'snow' set looked before it was textured and painted.
It's a mix of polystyrene blocks, fibre board tiles, dense foam and chicken wire.

A closer view of some of the mountains in their bare form.
You'll notice that the 'orange' mountains at he back aren't part of the final set as they didn't fit in with the overall scale.

Picture
This was a boulder I made to use in the foreground of certain shots to help give depth. It never actually made it into the film but it's pretty so I thought I'd show it here.

Picture
Here is a section of finished set with a piece of removable foreground that can be placed anywhere in front of the set to give extra depth.

This is the complete 'snow' set including the night sky background and removable foreground pieces. The main section measured about 8'x4'.

Picture
This is Promethues' transporter before all the technology was added.

Picture
The transporter -complete with computers, navigation system, wires and customary blinky lights. (There's also a screen featuring the game Space Invaders for those with a keen eye).

Picture
This Prometheus' armature skeleton. It's made from aluminium wire, professional animation armature joints and dense foam.

Picture
Here is Prometheus almost complete except for his adorable face, all the components of which were made of dense foam and were removable.

Picture
This was Prometheus' stand in. I used him as a guide when building my sets so that I could get the scale right whilst the real Prometheus was still being built.

Picture
Here is are the same mountains after they've been textured and painted.

Picture
The trees were made simply by painting actual twigs from actual trees.

Picture
I had two backgrounds - for day and night (the space background was done using a green screen) - and this is how they started.

Picture
This is the night sky finished, with clouds and definition.

Picture
This is the moon Prometheus wanted to reach so much. Inside it's just a child's small football which I covered in papier mache and painted.

Picture
Here are two ladders in progress. There are three ladders in the film, each used for different angles ro provide different scales and perspectives.

Picture
This is Prometheus' house and shed as seen from really far away. I later added snow to the roof of each building, and there's also a tiny Prometheus to go with these.

Picture
Here is Prometheus with some fur but missing his signature lumberjack coat.

Picture
These are Prometheus' eyes. he had twelve pairs of eyes varying in expression to create blinking and different emotions.

Prometheus' Extensive Wardrobe

Although 'Prometheus and the Moon' is only a short film Prometheus wears quite a variety of outfits. I thought I'd showcase them here as he is very proud of them.

The Sets

There were four sets in this film; a snowy wilderness, Prometheus house, the shed, and the moon. My favourite was the shed because of all the little hidden treasures poking out of the boxes.

Some art from Prometheus and the Moon

As well as the art that features in the film itself, such as the Spiffle posters that Prometheus decorates his house with, I have also created other pieces such as DVD sleeves and posters to accompany the film. Here is some of the art work from within and without the film.

This was a fun test I did to see how Prometheus' armature skeleton moved.
