Read all about it! Haven Café has a new menu!

For the first few months of this year I was busy creating a new menu for Haven Café in Llandudno, on the beautiful North Wales coast.

The menu is designed to look like an old style newspaper and can be bought from Haven as a souvenir.

It took me a while to complete this project as graphic design really isn't one of my strengths but I'm very happy with how the finished menu looks. It was a fun challenge trying to fit all the information in without it feeling cramped, and to give each page it's own style whilst keeping a consistent look throughout.

So if you're ever in Llandudno pop into the Haven Café - the best café in Llandudno! - and have a browse through their new menu whilst eating the best cake you'll ever have!

Cardinals Cake.

I'm not making many cakes these days because I want to focus more time on my art, however my boyfriend turned 40 recently so I made him a special birthday cake. He's a fan of the Arizona Cardinals so made a cake of their logo. I have to say I'm super proud of how neat this cake is! It's definitely one of my favourites!

I can't believe I haven't posted on here since January! This is mostly because I've been making a lot of cake!
Picture
I made another unicorn cake after a friend saw the first one I did and loved it!

Another vehicle cake to add to my collection - a Straffords bus one this time.
Picture
My very first wedding/naked/tiered cake! This was a very large cake! I am so proud of this and it tasted amazing!!!
Picture
A nice stylish scooter cake. It's not flashy but I like it.

I feel I have finally conquered solid structures on top of cakes - those trains weren't moving anywhere! I've always been a big fan of Thomas the Tank and I really like this cake.

I made this daffodil and rose flower pot cake for my aunty's wedding.

My first football club badge cake. After making this I have decided that circles are definitely the most difficult thing to make out of icing!
Picture
A cake I made for my aunty and her girlfriends to take to Uttoxeter Acoustic Festival. It had an Alice in Wonderland/hippie/steampunk theme! I just love this cake!!!

This garden cake may be the cutest one I have ever made. This was so much fun to make and I'm really proud of it.

Cakes,cakes,cakes!

The new year was book-ended by a lot of cake! Below is a quick rundown of each one and there are more photos of each cake on my Cakes page.
Picture
This was one of my Christmas cakes. I wanted to do something cute this year, and what's cuter than little round robins in woolly hats! The little robin's yellow and orange hat was inspired by Jane's hat from Firefly, which is just a really fantastic hat!

This cake was supposed to have a Christmas tree on it with little presents but I forgot to buy green icing! However I had an abundance of white icing so I decided to go with snowmen instead. I love these two little guys; they're so adorable! I love how simple and innocent this cake looks too. It's just two little snowy friends showing how much they care for each other. A lovely Christmas moment.

This was a 21st birthday cake with a Real Madrid theme. I'm not really a football fan but I do like how the football pattern on this turned out.

I really loved making this cake. Unicorn cakes are really popular at the moment and I have actually wanted to try my hand at one for a while. I enjoyed doing the piping work on this. I haven't done a lot of piping work other than on cupcakes and it was nice to do something different. It was also my first time using gold food paint and I really like how it looks. Other than the fact I knocked over the tub full of little gold balls which went everywhere this cake was a pleasure to make. This was my first cake of 2018 and was a nice pretty way to start the year.

Now this cake was a fun challenge. When I first saw photos of other champagne bucket cakes I just couldn't figure how I was going to make one. I knew a real champagne bottle wouldn't work as it would be too heavy. In the end I decided to carve the bottle out of polystyrene as it's very light. I designed a label on my computer to try and make it look as much like a champagne bottle as possible, and used the gold wrapping from Ferrero Roche for the top (which I think was a little stroke of genius!). I'm pretty proud of this cake, and it was fun to do something so different.

A Summer of Cakes!

I've had a busy summer in the cake making department! I've made a princess, several cars, trolls, flowers and some sheet music from scratch! Below is a photo of each cake, but if you'd like to see more detailed photos and the story behind each one please head over to my Cakes page.
Although I had lots of fun making all of these cakes it was sad doing each one without my little Sadie to help clean up after me. Also, now that she's gone I've realised how much mess I male when I'm baking! x x

I'm back!

It's been a while! I've taken a little break from art these past few months to put together my new art room. It's been quite a project and as usual took longer than I thought it would because I can't help but be picky! It's finished now though and is all flowery and twinkly and ready for some creative magic!

Here is the first painting painted in my new room. It's a copy of another painting that someone asked me to do for them. The original painting was done in oils and was really beautiful. I did this one in acrylics and I think it's a pretty good copy.

Although I haven't been creating much in the way of art I have made a few cakes. First there were my two Christmas cakes which were a bit simpler this year as we went away for Christmas and they needed to travel. Then I made a cake featuring a Mini for a birthday. I'm pretty proud of my Mini cake. The inside of the Mini is made from polystyrene to keep it light and keep a more solid shape.
You can see more photos of these on my Cakes page. Now it's time to get back to art!

I see you have a cake! I have one too . . .

A few weeks back it was my birthday and I was so jealous of the Rapunzel cake I made for someone else that I decided to make a princess cake for myself! It was a toss up between Belle and Mulan, but after looking for inspiration on the internet I noticed that there were practically no Mulan cakes so I figured I would make the first one!

I took some artistic license with her dress by adding some little flourishes. It was lots of fun to make, and proof that you are never too old to have a princess birthday cake!

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, baked in a cake . . .

The doll inside the cake was a proper Rapunzel doll so it had lovely long hair. I thought about leaving it down but it obscured a lot of the cake, so I decided to plait it like in the film. I wanted to add flowers to her hair to make it even more authentic but I didn't want to use icing as I wanted the doll to be usable after the cake was eaten and I didn't want to ruin her hair. I decided on flower stickers as they were simple to use and didn't require any glue.

All of the doll that is covered with cake (from her chest down) I wrapped in cling film so she wouldn't need too much cleaning up after the cake was eaten and her original clothing could be replaced. It's a cake and present in one!
I recently got to make another fun birthday cake for another one of my many relations. This time it was a princess cake with a real doll in the centre. I've wanted to make one of these for ages, mostly because they're just so pretty! This princess cake was to be based on Rapunzel from Disney's Tangled (which in my opinion in vastly underrated and much better than Frozen, although Frozen is still pretty good - but that's a debate for another time).
Picture
I had to take some artistic liberties with the dress design as Rapunzel doesn't have a large skirted dress in the style of one of these cakes. I took the basic elements of her dress such as the sleeves, the bodice and the swirly leaf designs and designed a dress around them.
Picture
Below is a little video of how she was made. Please try to ignore the massive mess in the background! I'm not really one of those clean-it-up-as-you-go bakers, I'm more of a make-a-whole-lot-of-mess-then-deal-with-it-later kind of baker (much to my Mum's eternal dismay!)
I love everything about this cake but I have to say the bit I'm most proud of is her hair! That's a five stranded plait right there! With five tiny little plaits all mixed in! Plaiting level: Ninja!

Easter bonnet eggs-travaganza

Today my Mum had an Easter bonnet party to celebrate good health. We had an Easter bonnet competition, and I'm very proud to say I won 'prettiest bonnet'!

I couldn't find an actual bonnet that fit on my head as they're mostly made for children, and since I've always wanted a ridiculously over-the-top fascinator I figured this was the perfect opportunity to make one!

I made the eggs by cutting plain white polystyrene eggs in half and then painting them to look like chocolate eggs.

I also made some yummy cakes for the party, because lets face it, most of us only eat the 'food' food to get to the dessert.

AbracadaBra-Cake!

Recently I made my first giant cupcake for a 50th birthday. To decorate it I made a pair of bra and knickers, boots and a handbag out of icing. The main body of the cake is ringed in chocolate fingers and tied with a ribbon. I bought a new icing tip to create my first rose pattern icing and finished the whole thing off with little silver balls.

It was a fun cake to make, and the cake mix was particularly yummy (the cake itself was chocolate). I'm pretty proud of this cake, and I'm told it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
You can see more of my cake creations on my Cakes page.
