Green and simple.

Here was a nice wooden dresser for which I painted a single colour on the drawers. The dresser was nice enough as it was but adding just a bit of colour gives a completely new style. There is an extra section to this dresser that sits on top of it.

Oriental awesome.

I was given another cupboard to paint with a free rein on design. My very first thought was 'oriental', mainly because the handles and hinges reminded me of little Chinese dragons. This is what the cupboard looked like after I'd sanded it down.

I had to give the handles and hinges a good cleaning as they were covered in limescale. I soaked them in coke for a day and then scrubbed them clean and they came out looking like new.

I wanted to do a bold statement piece on this cupboard so I decided to do a black and gold Chinese dragon. It was a fairly simple design but I made sure to include all the elements that my research showed Chinese dragon designs usually feature: a long body, beard, whiskers, flowing mane, scales, fiery tail and clouds of smoke/fire.
Here you can see it at the beginning stages.

I chose a sea-green colour for this cupboard to go with the oriental theme. I painted two layers of undercoat and then three layers of colour. This photo show this process half way through.

The inside of this cupboard was a real mess (I think something had been spilled in it once) so I decided to decorate it. I used a gold paper with a leaf pattern.
This is the finished design. I love the way the gold came out on the dragon, and it was fun to add art work. This cupboard did have a few scratches and dents but I think it just adds to its charm. I really like this piece.

I'm painting in the rain . . .

It seems our two weeks of sunshine are officially over. This is the view from my work shed today; wet. At least the garden still looks pretty in the rain.

Mirrored beauty.

I was given a beautiful mirrored desk to paint recently. It wasn't in bad shape to begin with it just needed a clean and a new coat of paint to freshen it up. The top of the desk had a layer of vinyl on it that had to come off before I could paint it; it did not want to come off! After a battle of about half an hour the vinyl finally came off, and once I'd scrubbed what was left of the glue off the top the desk was ready to paint.

The original plan with this desk was to paint over all of the gold detailing and then paint it back on later. A lot of the moulded detailing had gone a bit yellow with age but when painted over it started to look like new. The mirror section had to be dismantled to make painting it easier and neater. The desk also came with a stool that had to painted to match. It took 2-3 coats of paint to cover this desk fully (the gold bits needed a third coat).
The finished product ended up slightly different from the original design. Instead of painting the gold back on we decided the desk looked much nicer without it. It looks a lot classier and fresher without the gold, and once the stool is reupholstered I think the whole thing will look almost brand new. This is another one of those pieces I wish I could keep for myself!

Dexter's Laboratory

Say hello to the pain in my neck. This black table came with the brief 'spray paint it white' - four little words, so much hassle. You can see here the start of the undercoat.
Picture
In order to protect my work space I created a plastic spray paint area and turned my shed into the set of Dexter. I will say one positive thing about this table; it had a very handy hole in the middle.

Well, five cans of spray paint later the black refused to disappear and it was decided to just paint it white. They say 'you live and learn' and I learned never try to spray paint a black table white. Ever!

My favourite table!

I love it when I get given a piece of art to do with no restrictions on colour or design. I was recently given a small white side table and told to do what I wanted with it and I could instantly see the finished design in my head.

The table was already painted white but the finish on it was terrible so I decided to sand it all down and start again. This is how it looked after I sanded it. I then added two layers of undercoat and got to work on the end design. . .

And this is my new favourite table!

Isn't it beautiful! I wanted to create something that would look equally at home in a little girls bedroom, a grown up living room and a doll house. I absolutely adore this shade of pink; it's like candy floss and baby bunnies. I wanted to do a large statement design on the top rather than a small pattern here and there to give this table something to make it stand out. I also think it raises it above the level of 'girly' into 'ladylike'.

Every so often I make something that I really want to keep for myself, and this was definitely one of those times. I love you flower table!

Can't forget the craft . . .

Although I've been busy painting furniture lately I still need to make craft items for my Etsy page. This is my latest stable sign which went all the way to California. I love the font on this sign, it's so adorable and girly. It was nice to make something small after working on so many large items recently.

The furniture adventure continues! This cupboard took several stages to complete as it was quite an awkward shape with lots of separate sections. Here is what it looked like when I received it. The back and two doors have been removed.
Picture
I had to give this piece a good cleaning before I could paint it as it was very dusty. This photo shows a comparison between two glass door panels before and after I cleaned them. (The dog who is very helpfully demonstrating this is Elvis).
Picture
I took a lot of masking tape to cover all the edges touching glass on this cupboard; font and back! This is what it looked like after three coats of undercoat. To give this cupboard a country cottage look it was to be painted in chalk paint instead of Farrow and Ball eggshell. I chose Annie Sloane chalk paint as it has a good reputation for quality.
Picture
This is the cupboard after it has been painted with chalk paint. The back has yet to be done (I'm still deciding the best thing to do with it). There are also extra glass pieces to this and when the whole cupboard has been put back together I will take a good photo of it. Even half finished I think this cupboard looks great.

Splat!

As I said in my previous post most of the furniture I'll be painting comes with a design brief. This next piece came with a very specific one. I was given this table (the two holes are filled with glass panels) and told it was to be black with the two glass panels painted in a Jackson Pollock 'splatter' style.
Picture
After I sanded it down I put two coats of primer on it.
Picture
After giving the table 2 1/2 coats of black paint I got to work on the glass panels. I decided to paint the panels grey to give the illusion that they were made of stone. I then used black, white and bright blue to create the splatter design. It was my first time doing something like this and it was immensely fun to do! It seems to me that the more mess I make doing something the more fun it is and I made a lot of mess doing this! (You should see the kitchen after I've baked something!)

Seriously - paint everywhere!
Picture
This is how it turned out! I really like this table. The feel of it has completely changed from its original design and now it's modern, fun and ready for a new lifestyle.

Pitch Black/Purbeck Stone/St Giles Stone
